You can choose between one with guidance lines and one without. The guidance lines are for calligraphy and specifically for pages of writing with 4 or 6 characters. The plain black mat can be used for both calligraphy and sumi-e.
The white mat is specifically for sumi-e and the colour helps to show the ink effects well.
